Recalling 7 Major Movements of Mahatma Gandhi on His 154th Birthday

‘The Father of Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi played a massive role in India’s freedom struggle. Let’s remember him once again on his 154th birthday on 2nd October by discussing all the major movements he has led.

1. Champaran Satyagraha (1917)

Champaran Satyagraha was the farmers’ uprising that was led by Gandhiji to protest against the British forcing farmers to grow indigo without payment.

2. Kheda Satyagraha (1918)

This is a non-violent act led by Gandhiji at Kheda, Gujarat to protest against British rulers’ decision of imposing high tax on poor peasants.

3. Khilafat Movement (1919)

This was a Muslim-launched political campaign led by Gandhiji against British government’s policy against Turkey and its huge success turned Gandhiji into a national leader.

4. Non-Cooperation Movement (1920)

Gandhi led this biggest civil disobedience movement which was a response to the horrible incident in Jallianwalabagh made by the British government.

5. Boycott of Simon Movement (1928)

It was a famous movement led by Gandhiji to boycott the Simon Commission and the slogan of this movement was ‘ Simon, go back!’

6. Dandi march (1930)

Dandi March, or Satyagraha movement, was the most famous movement of Gandhiji in which he marched 24 days from Sabarmati ashram to Dandi against British rulers’ salt tax.

7. Quit India Movement  (1942)

This was also known as ‘’ Bharat Choro Andalan’’ in which Gandhiji demanded an official British withdrawal from India forever.

Gandhiji had done a lot to get back the independence of India from the British. He will always be in our memory for his brave acts.
